Sitting At The Feet Of Jesus
Author,

I was sitting there in church listening
to the sermon, the speaker read the opening text;
Luke 10: 38-42 38Now
as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. 39She had a sister called Mary, who was seated at the Lord's feet, listening to His word. 40But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and
she came up to Him and said, "Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her
to help me." 41But the Lord answered and said to her,
"Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; 42but
only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her." (New American Standard
Bible)
As the speaker spoke about the scene he made it sound so real, and I could
see the complete look of trust and earnestness on Mary’s face as she sat there enthralled by the words of Jesus. How privileged she was to be alive and sitting in that casual setting, listening to
Jesus talk! Great prophets in the Old Testament had longed to see that day, and
did not. Yet, there was Mary, a women of Bethany,
beholding and listening to the Lord and Savior. I felt my heart twinge with some kind of painful emotion, tears came to my
eyes, how I wished I could have had that opportunity to sit at Jesus feet!
The speaker brought
me back to the sermon, opening to our minds that all is not lost, we can even now sit at the feet of Jesus. How? By listening to His Word. If you have the Holy Bible at your disposal, you have the same opportunity
that Mary had way back there in Bethany. By opening the Bible, in your own personal
time, and reading the words that Jesus spoke, we place ourselves at His feet. Not just in theory, but in reality. For as we
pray for Him to send us guidance and understanding through the Holy Spirit, and we open our Bibles, He will be faithful and
come to us and teach us. When Jesus was preparing his disciples for the time
when he would leave them to go back to heaven he said to them;
“And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may
abide with you for ever;” John 14:16. We are not left here alone, to wish we could have been in that wonderful setting, sitting
at the feet of Jesus, listening to His Words, because Jesus continued;
“I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.” John 14: 18.
I was able to catch the vision of how I could sit at the feet of
Jesus, even now in 2009, in a world that is whirling totally out of control. It can be my choice, to come to my quiet place.
To open the Holy Bible and pray for The Holy Spirit to be there, teaching me the words of Jesus. This isn’t something
that you can experience by reading about it. It is something you must do for yourself. Then you will know that restorative
peace and happiness that comes from sitting at the feet of Jesus.
The sermon was ending, the speaker was inviting his wife to come up. The
music started and she sang this lovely song with such heartfelt meaning. I dedicated my quiet times anew to sit at the feet
of Jesus…… Will you too, commit your quiet time to sitting
at the feet of Jesus?
Sitting at the Feet of Jesus
1. Sitting at the feet of Jesus,
Oh, what words I hear Him say!
Happy place! so near, so precious!
May it find me there each day.
Sitting at the feet of Jesus,
I would look upon the past;
For His love has been so gracious,
It has won my heart at last.
2. Sitting at the feet of Jesus,
Where can mortal be more blest?
There I lay my sins and sorrows
And, when weary, find sweet rest.
Sitting at the feet of Jesus,
There I love to weep and pray,
While I from His fullness gather
Grace and comfort every day.
3. Bless me,
O my Savior, bless me,
As I
sit low at Thy feet.
Oh, look
down in love upon me;
Let me
see Thy face so sweet.
Give
me, Lord, the mind of Jesus;
Make
me holy as He is.
May I prove
I've been with Jesus,
Who is
all my righteousness.
