Today I Saw a Butterfly
By Evie 2007
Today I saw a butterfly while walking in the meadow.
He lifted up on lustrous wing and followed on the breeze,
He tasted sugar sweetness from purple flowers and yellow.
He tarried not for long then moved on to one to please.
Today I saw a butterfly slowly folding back his wings,
The pattern on his wings was black and orange and gold,
Beauty of color and grace unsurpassed by many things.
Yet of his carefree days the number will soon be told.
Today I saw a butterfly resting beside a puddle.
He was taking one last drink from wherever he could,
Tomorrow his wings will blow away with the stubble,
Why die so soon butterfly, stay, I wish you would.
Today I saw a butterfly so bright upon a flower.
How like the butterfly I am, flitting from blessing
to blessing,
Trusting in my Creator for clothes and food and shelter.
I know my days are numbered, all in His timely blessing.
